10 space heater safety rules everyone should know.

Space heaters - we’ve all heard the horror stories of using them. You shouldn’t be afraid though! Because the weather seems to change at the drop of a hat in Alabama many homeowners prefer to buy space heaters than to turn the heat on. When used properly, these can be a great tool in keeping your home nice and toasty, and saving you money on your heating bills. Here we have 10 tips to keep you safe this winter!

  • If you have pets or small children, be sure to always be with them in the same room.
  • Set a timer to ensure that you switch the heater off, that way it does not overheat.
  • Plug your heater into a wall outlet. NEVER plug a portable space heater into a power strip or extension cord. They should always be in a standard wall outlet.
  • Be sure to always unplug portable heater when you leave your house or when they’re not in use. Even if they’re turned off, they should be unplugged.
  • Check the plug and cord to make sure there are no signs of overheating, or of frayed cords/wires.
  • If you chose a heater that is powered by gas or kerosene, always ensure that there are no leaks, and that it is well ventilated.
  • Heaters should be placed on flat surfaces, such as the floor. Do not leave them near curtains, on dressers, or anywhere that they could fall.
  • In addition to keeping heaters on a level space, you also want them to be in an open area. Under a desk or table is not safe.
  • Don’t plug any devices into the same outlet as the heater. This will help prevent overheating of the outlet, and prevent a fire!
  • Most electrical devices are tested and certified, but always be sure to check that your heater is as well. This ensures that it meets safety standards. The most common label will be the UL (Underwriters Laboratory).
