Deck Your Halls With These Important Electrical Safety Tips.

The Holidays are in full swing and no doubt you are decorating your home to make the season bright. With all the things there are to do this time of year, sometimes it is easy to overlook a few electrical safety details. Electrical fires and injuries increase during the holiday season and are responsible for more ER visits across the county.

Not to worry, these simple holiday safety tips will keep your home safe, merry and bright:

  • Plan your displays according to how many outlets are near and where they are located
  • Consider investing in LED lights. They use less energy, run cooler, last years longer and are brighter than traditional incandescent lights.
  • It is important to purchase electrical decorations from reputable retailers and are approved by nationally recognized testing laboratories
  • Inspect all cords and strands for frays, loose or exposed wires, cracks, or damaged sockets.
  • Read and follow all manufacturer's instructions for each electrical device.
  • Don't connect more than three incandescent light strands together. Another great thing about LEDs is that many more strands can be connected at once.
  • Check to make sure cords are not pinched under furniture, windows or doors. It could damage the cord's insulation.
  • Never staple or nail cords to walls, baseboards, doorways or anything else.
  • Mount lights in a way to ensure the cord's insulation is not being damaged.
  • Unplug cords when replacing bulbs or fuses.
  • Always turn off all indoor and outdoor electrical decorations before going to bed or leaving home.
  • Keep real Christmas trees hydrated.
