Important Safety Tips for the Rainy Season

No matter where you live, during periods of heavy rain and intense thunderstorms, there are important things to remember with regard to your safety and the safety of your loved ones.

It is vital to remember that floods from rain can occur anywhere with gradually rising flood waters or flash flooding that occurs without warning. Water is a mighty powerful force that can quickly overtake people, vehicles and even homes.

Safety Reminders for driving in heavy rain:

If you absolutely must drive in the rain, slow down and drive carefully. If it becomes hard to see, pull over safely until the rain slows down.

Most vehicles will float in only a foot of water - causing the driver to use control and the vehicle to stall.

NEVER DRIVE THROUGH FLOODWATERS!

Water is a conductor of electricity - stay away from waters near downed power lines!

Stay off your cell phone except to call for emergency assistance.

Flooded Buildings or Basements

Turn the electricity off at the main breaker, even if the power company has turned off the electricity on the grid.

Do not walk into a room with both running electricity and water.

Act quickly by drying wet or damp areas with a fan within 24 to 48 hours of a flood.

Always have a safety evacuation plan for your home or business in case of a flood or fire emergency
