PROS:
- It's been said once but bears repeating – endless hot water! That means no rushed cold showers before work because the kids used up all the hot water before school.
- Expanded lifespan. A traditional water heater only has a lifespan of about 10 to 15 years, whereas a tankless model practically doubles that, lasting well over 20+ years.
- Less clutter! You won't need to dedicate useful closet space to a large, clunky water heater. Instead, you could have a hidden panel tucked in a laundry room or even a bathroom. It can even go outside!
- Your bills will start to shrink! Energy.com says "For homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, demand (or tankless) water heaters can be 24%–34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters." Regarding money, this can save a family upwards of $100 every year.
CONS:
- Sticker shock may happen when purchasing a tankless model. Electric units start at around $1,000 while gas-powered units range more toward $3,000.
- Remodeling costs. If your home is currently equipped with a traditional water heater, the process to remove and replace with a tankless model is quite complicated and will require hard work and a decent amount of money. It is also very important to make sure your home is up to date enough to house a tankless unit.
If you can handle the initial high one time prices to get the tankless water heater, it will save you money in the long run. It is not recommended if you don't have a long term commitment to your residency but will benefit the home owner if the time comes to sell. Ultimately, your water usage and budget are two of the main factors in deciding if a tankless water heater is right for you.
